If we all drove electric cars, how would road repairs and maintenance be paid for?

At least theoretically, road maintenance is paid for with gasoline taxes.  The more you drive, the more gas you use, the more gasoline tax you pay.  Drive less, pay less.  Drive more, pay more.  The more fuel efficient vehicles are, the less gas purchased.  With all electric cars, there would be no gas purchased.  Where would the funds come from for road maintenance?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't some places have "recharge" stations?  I'm not sure how that works, but I'm sure it isn't free.  They can put a hefty tax on that, first of all.  Second of all, they will probably build more toll roads.   With the lackluster consumer reaction to electric cars, I think this is a problem we don't need to worry about for a few decades to come. It's unfortuate, but true.

I agree, but what if you charge your car at home?  There are taxes on electricity, but not for roads.  The govt taxes things you use to get you to stop using them (i.e. cigarettes), but they really need the tax revenue.  Sometimes their agendas clash

Don't worry, the government will find a way to tax you, they always do.  They'll probably charge some kind of road usage fee and get it from you through tolls.

Ask yourself where electricity is coming from. And then you have the answer. Electricity can be taxed.
Another way to collect road toll is to have a surveillance system, something like a GPS location signal attached to each car to record driving routes. This is no SciFi. In Germany we have something similar for trucks on the Autobahn to collect toll.
